FORGE VALLEY COMMUNITY SCHOOL

In July 2007, following several months of consultation, Sheffield City Council announced it was closing two secondary schools in the North West of the city, Myers Grove and Wisewood School & Community Sports College. The Council confirmed that it would be replacing them with a new purpose built school on the Wood Lane site under the Building Schools for the Future programme. The proposed opening date is September 2011.

However, national government policy made it clear that the running of any new school had to be put out to competition and that the local authority would not automatically be granted the role. Many from the local area expressed concerns that the running of their new school could be given over to either corporate businesses or organisations, neither of which would be answerable to the local community.

It was at this point that a number of parents, governors and members of staff from the two schools came together and set about forming a group who would put together a proposal to run the new school in lieu of the local authority. Not a challenge for the faint hearted.

Such was the strength of the proposal that on November 21st 2007, the Secretary of State for Education granted approval of the bid. The Proposing Group was now empowered to undertake the task of establishing the new school, from the initial designs to opening the new school. This was a major commitment and one that members of the Proposing Group knew would involve a great deal of hard work and effort.

In July 2008, the ruling administration of Sheffield City Council reaffirmed its decision to proceed with the proposed new school. The challenge for all involved was to now deliver the best educational facilities in this city, and maybe even further!

Over the next twelve months an interim governing body was formed and, working together with various agencies, after months of careful research and design the plans for the new school building were drawn up.

These plans were submitted to the Planning Board and approved on the 12th January 2010. Due to  the new school being built on Green Belt land, approval was then required from the Secretary of State for the Environment. This too was also approved. Preparations for the construction began in January 2010.

Please feel free to contact the Governing Body for further information.
